Privacy Policy
Your privacy is not just a feature — it's the foundation of Kalory Help.
Plain words, no fine print.
Your Food Log Is Stored on Your Device
Everything you log — meals, water intake, weight, and profile information — is stored on your device, protected by iOS data encryption (your profile is additionally encrypted by the app), and is included in your device's own backups. There are no accounts, and we keep no copy of your log on our servers. Information leaves your device only in the cases described below: when you use AI meal logging or scan a barcode, the device and subscription checks that protect the service, and an end-to-end encrypted copy in your own iCloud when iCloud Sync is on.
No Accounts or Personal Profiles
There is no sign-up and no user account. We don't ask for your name, email address or phone number, we don't build a profile of you, and neither your food log nor your iCloud encryption key is ever stored on our servers.
AI Meal Logging
AI meal logging is optional. When you use it, the meal photo or description you submit (a spoken description is sent as text), together with your app language, diet type and halal-mode setting, is sent over an encrypted connection to Kalory's server, which passes it to a third-party AI provider (Anthropic or Google) to estimate nutrition. The provider processes it under its API terms and may keep it for a limited time for safety and abuse monitoring. Your diet type and halal-mode setting go with every AI request. The halal-mode setting may reveal your religious practice; it is used only so the AI can flag foods that may not be halal, and for nothing else. Kalory does not store your photos or descriptions. To avoid repeating work, the AI's result may be cached on our server for up to one hour, filed under a one-way hash of the request. For each AI request we also keep an anonymous usage record, with no device identifier — which feature was used, the result status, processing time, amount of AI processing used, platform, language and time — for 90 days, to prevent abuse and manage costs. If you don't use AI meal logging, none of this is sent.
Barcode Scanning
Barcode scanning is optional. When you scan a product, only its barcode number and your installation's random identifier (used for rate limiting) are sent over an encrypted connection to Kalory's server, which looks it up in its own copies of the Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central databases. The camera image never leaves your device, and we don't store the barcode number or record which products you scan; a lookup only counts toward a short-term usage limit tied to your installation's identifier. If you don't scan barcodes, nothing is sent. If you correct a product's values, the corrected version is saved only on your device (and in your end-to-end encrypted iCloud copy when iCloud Sync is on); it isn't sent to our server.
Device and Subscription Checks
To protect the AI and barcode services from abuse, the app creates a random identifier for this installation and uses Apple's App Attest to prove to our server that requests come from a genuine copy of Kalory. The identifier isn't linked to your name, your Apple ID or any other app; our server uses it for usage limits and deletes the related records within about a day (24 hours, plus up to an hour until routine cleanup runs). If you subscribe to Kalory Pro, Apple handles the payment; the app sends the App Store transaction ID to our server, which checks it with Apple to confirm your subscription and remembers the result for up to 24 hours. Apple also notifies our server of subscription changes such as renewals and refunds, which we record using one-way hashed identifiers and keep only as long as needed to manage your subscription, deleting them within 24 months. We never receive your payment details or your Apple ID.
Voice Input
If you describe a meal by voice, the app uses Apple's speech recognition to turn your speech into text. Apple may process the audio on its servers under Apple's privacy policy. Kalory never receives the recording — only the resulting text, and only if you submit it for AI meal logging.
No Analytics or Tracking
Kalory Help contains no analytics services, advertising SDKs or tracking technologies, shows no ads, and never tracks you across other apps or websites. Apart from the anonymous AI usage records described above, we don't record how you use the app, and we never collect your location.
End-to-End Encrypted iCloud Sync
iCloud Sync is a Kalory Pro feature. For Pro users signed in to iCloud, it is on by default so your data stays up to date across your devices. Your data is encrypted on your device before it is saved to your own private iCloud. The encryption key is generated on your device and stored in your iCloud Keychain, so only your devices can decrypt it — Apple cannot read it, and it is never sent to us. You can turn sync off on any device in Settings. If your Kalory Pro subscription ends, syncing stops but nothing is deleted: your iCloud copy stays, and you can restore it to a device for free.
Apple Health
Where Kalory offers Apple Health integration, connecting it is optional and can be turned off at any time in Settings > Apple Health. If you connect it, Kalory reads your weight and today's active energy from Health, and writes the weights, food nutrients (calories, macros, fiber, sugar, sodium) and water you log. This happens on your device only: data read from or written to Health is never sent to Kalory's servers or to the AI provider, isn't used for advertising or marketing, and isn't shared with anyone. Weigh-ins imported from Health are kept on this device and aren't included in iCloud Sync. You can control which data Kalory may read and write in the Health app.
Notifications
Reminders and the daily tip are scheduled locally on your device and do not send any of your data off the device. You can disable them at any time in Settings > Reminders or in your device settings.
No Selling or Sharing
We never sell your data or share it for advertising. The only other companies involved are the AI provider that analyzes the meals you choose to log with AI, our hosting and error-monitoring providers, which process data only on our behalf, and Apple, for purchases, App Attest, speech recognition and, when iCloud Sync is on, storing your end-to-end encrypted copy in your own iCloud, which neither Apple nor we can decrypt.
Data Deletion
You can delete all your data at any time using the "Delete All Data" option in Settings. On a device with iCloud Sync on, or one that restored your data from iCloud, this also deletes your iCloud copy, even without Kalory Pro, and your other devices remove the data when they next sync. Because we don't keep a copy of your log, deleted data cannot be recovered by us. Anonymous AI usage records expire automatically after 90 days.
